Cleared by Fire, Platted for the Railroad
Woodburn takes its name from the enormous wood burnings Joseph Edgerton and Joseph Smith used to clear the land when they platted the town in 1865 as a stop on the Wabash Railroad, originally called Phelps Station. It became the first town incorporated in Maumee Township.
