Ground Bought Straight From the Canal Commissioner
New Haven's town site was assembled in 1835 when the Burgess family bought roughly 160 acres in Adams Township -- first reached by settlers in 1820 and permanently settled by 1823 -- from Samuel Hanna, the Wabash and Erie Canal's own commissioner.
